Suspected Cyberstalking

Subject: Susan, 45 years old

Background:

Susan contacted our service with concerns about being cyberstalked by her ex-partner. She suspected that her device might have been hacked and that her location services were being exploited to track her movements. Her ex-partner had been showing up at places where she was, raising a significant alarm.

Initial Assessment:

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation, our helpline responder guided Susan through the Online Footprint Form and Stalking Form.

Actions Taken:

  1. Provided Initial Advice: Shared links to guides on cyberstalking to offer Susan preliminary advice on managing the situation.

  2. Checked Location Services: Assisted Susan in reviewing which apps had access to her location services.

  3. Reviewed Online Account Security: Evaluated the security of her online accounts, focusing on password strength and the activation of multi-factor authentication (MFA).

  4. Protected Mail Activity: Examined the settings on her iPhone, specifically for Protect Mail Activity. Noted that this setting was not enabled, potentially exposing her location in email headers. This setting was then enabled to prevent location information from being shared in outgoing emails.

Outcome:

After implementing these measures, Susan felt satisfied with the support received and indicated that no further assistance was needed at that time.
